"Hamlisch
put together an entertaining all-Gershwin program for this past weekend's
National Symphony Orchestra concerts at the Kennedy Center Concert
Hall. He brought in pianist Paul Posnak to play some Gershwin improvisations
he has transcribed and the "I Got Rhythm Variations". Posnak
approaches this music with respect and passion, and produced readings
that were as notable for their musicality and their artistic integrity
as they were for their pianism".
-Joan Reinthaler, The Washington Post
What several hundred of us heard is the real thing, like Gershwin
playing right up there on stage. He seems immersed in the works he
plays. No, not immersed but transported into that other world, the
world in which these musicians lived and worked. The

Posnaks performances alongside the composers shows the

"Dear
Paul:
On your grand performance at yesterday's Musicale, my colleagues have
reached a unanimous decision. It was brilliantly engaging, from first
note to last."

"Pianist
Posnak, Charlotte Symphony Present Premier Performance" (Chopin
Concerto No.2). Posnak made the piano sing with just the right emphasis,
timing and mood. Posnak played with astounding spirit, with both tenderness
and strength. (In) the final movement, it was fun to watch Posnak's
fingers fly across the keys on extremly rapid and difficult passages..
..The audience's standing ovation demanded encores. Posnak obliged.
He performed a note-for-note transcription from old recordings of
an improvisation by George Gershwin of "Someone to Watch Over
Me" with jazzy, sweet tenderness. In Posak's final encore, he
recreated the magic of "Fats" Waller's stride style in "Ain't
Misbehaven". Posnak is a unique master of the piano, no matter
which style he plays." -The Charlotte
Sun-Herald
Posnak
demonstrated the pianistic virtuosity for which he is well-known.
In a continuing display of his ability to play in widely different
musical styles, Posnak was as much at home with these jazz piano arrangements
as he was with the Haydn, Chopin and Debussy works. The

And
what a marvelous evening it turned out to be! Dr. Posnak, in addition
to his classical career, has achieved a worldwide reputation for his
jazz improvisations and his note-for-note transcriptions of the great
jazz pianist-composers of the 1920s and 30s. The result
was both familiar and distinctive. Entertainment

"The
audience was floored...no-one could have expected such strokes of
genius. There could not have been a better opening of the "Jazz
Lights 2003" series than with this pianist. Even without his
explanatory comments, the audience could not help but value his transcriptions
and improvisations. The way he swung through the ragtime, blues and
jazz classics of the 20's and 30's with such purpose, how punctuated
with light fingers he "flirted" with his keys, the refined
audience had no choice but to shake their heads in disbelief and pay
homage by bursting into spontaneous "oohs" and "ahs"...Paul
Posnak could truly enjoy the applause and the endless calls for encores;
he smiled broadly, as the storm of applause was more than deserved"

"Passionate Playing" (headline).
Posnak's program spanned an arc from Louis Moreau Gottschalk to Scott
Joplin and to George Gershwin and Thomas Waller. Right at the beginning,
with "Sweet and Lowdown", an improvisation by George Gershwin,
ensued a wildly played, masterful introduction to the world of Jazz.
...The change to the "Three Piano Blues" of Aaron Copland
led into a different sound-world, and thereafter, back to Ragtime. Afterward,

performances concluded with Posnak's uninhibited playing with pulsating
Gershwin rhythms. Before and after the encores, there was sustained
applause without stop. Posnak understood how to fashion a richly varied
evening and to superbly entertain with passionate playing."
